About Kardinya Primary School
Kardinya Primary School is located at Ochiltree Way in Kardinya in WA (Western Australia). You can contact us via phone on (08) 9337 7544 or anytime via our email address at Kardinya.ps@det.wa.edu.au. The suburb of Kardinya is located approximately 12kms South of Perth City and 6kms East of Fremantle. Kardinya Primary School was established in February 1977 with 214 students and officially opened on 15th August 1979. The school campus occupies a very pleasantly landscaped site with various trees reminiscent of its previous background as native Eucalypt woodland and Pine plantation. The area from which the school draws its students has a socio-economic index moderately higher than the Australian population average. Parents come from a range of professional, public service, business and other occupations including a number of mature age graduate or undergraduate students.
There are 560 students from Kindergarten to Year 7 currently enrolled here. While most of our student population are Australian-born, some come from families who are recent immigrants and seven percent were born overseas. Countries of birth include the U.K., China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, Bangladesh, South Africa, USA, Malaysia, Zambia, Korea, India, Sweden and Hong Kong. The school also accepts fee paying students when there are positions available.
The teaching and learning program is based on the WA Curriculum Framework and there are progress reports to parents via class meetings, parent interviews and formal achievement reports. Students in Years 3, 5 and 7 will also sit the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy tests and receive printed reports of their progress and achievement in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Numeracy. Those children identified as gifted and talented benefit from both school and district-run programs. Some who have learning difficulties are provided with extra tutoring by qualified education assistants or volunteers in our 'Learning Assistance Program'. Students from a non-English speaking background may receive help from our English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Many students of recent times have achieved outstanding results in State and National testing programs, in Musical events and sporting competitions. Our students consistently achieve significantly higher than the State average on Literacy and Numeracy tests. A number of our year 7 students win scholarships for selective high school programs each year. Many of our alumni are successful in business, the professions, sport and the media and when invited back to school, they speak with fondness of their time at Kardinya.
Teaching staff are very experienced, with an average of over 20 years teaching. Kardinya PS has a principal, two deputy principals and 16 classified senior teachers and a Level 3 teacher. All teachers are well qualified, with a number having post-graduate studies at diploma, second degree and Master's level. Education assistants help in the Early Childhood area, those with special needs and English as a second language (ESL). Other support staff are led by the Registrar and include School Officers, a Library Officer, a gardener and a cleaning team.

School buildings are in two main teaching blocks with 6-8 teaching areas, 'wet areas' and small withdrawal rooms. There are also four single classrooms and four early childhood units. A Library, administration block, covered assembly area and a canteen, make up the campus. All teaching areas have air-cooling systems installed. A Music centre was recently built to house the longstanding and popular Music program. Facilities for disabled students are provided in parts of the site. Computer networks provide classrooms access to learning and teaching software as well as the World Wide Web from around 100 workstations. Part of the Library has been set up as a computer laboratory. The school grounds are extensive with an oval and several netball courts. There are strong links to local Council, sporting clubs and the Kardinya Residents' Association.
High standards are celebrated and enjoyed by students, parents and staff. Everybody is treated well and we work hard to cater for each child's needs. The learning program is varied and students gain a broad range of experiences, both at school and out in the community. Parents contribute strongly to the school decision-making process via the School Council and P&C Association as well as a number of working parties and committees. The community is consulted on a variety of issues of policy or operational importance. Parents and staff work well together to improve the learning environment. The P&C operates the canteen and uniform shop with paid and volunteer staff as a service for students and their families. Many parents support the school as volunteer helpers, mentors and fundraisers. Parental support is an integral part of how our school community works and there is a sense of pride and ownership in our combined achievements.
