History

The name Kardinya has Aboriginal origins and is believed to mean "sunrise".
Much of this area was originally farming land renowned for its piggeries, but part of it was the Somerville Pine Plantation and University of Western Australia Endowment land. Development of the area dates primarily from the post-war period, particularly from the 1970s. Many university personnel are commemorated in the street names of this suburb.
